liver values
You have had a blood test done, and the results show elevated liver values. What does this mean exactly? Is it serious? And what can you do yourself? In this article, we explain what liver values are, which factors influence them, and how you can actively support the liver.
Liver values are enzymes and proteins in the blood that provide information about the condition of the liver. When liver cells are damaged, these substances leak into the bloodstream โ similar to how a damaged cell loses its contents.
| Value | Normal value | Elevated in |
|---|---|---|
| ALAT (ALT) | < 45 U/L | Liver cell damage, hepatitis |
| ASAT (AST) | < 40 U/L | Liver and muscle cell damage |
| GGT (gamma-GT) | < 55 U/L | Alcohol consumption, bile duct problems |
| AF (alkaline phosphatase) | 35โ105 U/L | Bile ducts, bones |
Even moderate regular alcohol consumption can structurally increase GGT. The liver processes alcohol by converting it into acetaldehyde โ a toxic byproduct that damages liver cells.
Overweight, insulin resistance, and a diet high in processed carbohydrates are the main causes. ALAT and ASAT are often mildly to moderately elevated in fatty liver disease.
Paracetamol, statins, and contraceptive pills can all affect liver values. No reason to stop medications, but it is advisable to support the liver additionally.
Mild increases (up to 2โ3 times the normal value) are often treated conservatively by doctors. For higher increases, or in cases of jaundice, abdominal pain, or extreme fatigue, further investigation is needed. Always consult a doctor with persistently elevated liver values.
Milk thistle (silymarin) โ meta-analyses show significant reduction in ALAT and ASAT in fatty liver and alcoholic liver disease.
NAC (N-acetylcysteine) โ increases glutathione production and protects liver cells from oxidative damage. Clinical research confirms a reduction in ALAT and ASAT with elevated liver values.
